On Tuesday, a bomb threat email mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several other senior leaders set off a security scare in Delhi, causing authorities to tighten vigil around the Legislative Assembly and nearby areas.
Officials said the email was sent to Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and warned of an explosion at the Assembly building as well as the Vidhan Sabha Metro Station.
However, the message also named a number of prominent leaders, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
The first email reached the Assembly office around 7:28 am, and within minutes, another message was sent directly to the Speaker, according to news agency PTI. The threats triggered an immediate response from security agencies.
Police personnel, bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were rushed to the spot, with thorough checks carried out across the Assembly premises and surrounding areas. Security was visibly stepped up, and access to parts of the area was restricted during the operation.
Authorities have now launched a probe to trace the sender. Cyber teams are analysing the email’s origin and technical details to determine whether it is linked to earlier hoax threats reported in the capital.
The incident comes at a time when Delhi has witnessed a string of similar threat emails in recent months, keeping security agencies on high alert.
